“Better is the poor that walks in his uprightness, than he that is perverse in his ways, though he be rich” (Proverbs 28:6).
For those who have enjoyed “Fiddler on the Roof,” do you remember the poor Jewish milkman who had five daughters? One day in the midst of many problems and setbacks, Tevye stood in his dilapidated barn singing, “If I were a rich man,” dreaming of money, a mansion, a wife who would scream orders to the servants, and he would be asked questions by everyone, if only he were a rich man. Probably most of us have had a fleeting moment of wondering what it would be like to be able to write a check and meet huge needs throughout the world. As long as it is a fleeting moment, that probably is not harmful. Just remember that it is better to be poor (which most of us aren’t!) and upright than those who are rich and perverse. So for today, think of how much you have rather than that which is lacking.
For today: Move over Tevye. In Christ we are more than rich people!
