“From that time many of His disciples went back, and walked no more with Him” (John 6:66).
What a somber statement. After Jesus explained to the crowd that genuine discipleship would require genuine devotion and total submission to His plan, many of these disciples turned back and didn’t follow Him any longer. I can still remember the first man I met who turned back and stopped following the Lord. Previously he had seemed sincere. He seemed to be genuinely following the Lord. Then he missed a few Sunday services. After a few more services missed, I stopped by to see if everything was all right. He simply said he didn’t believe this and was finished with this business. Though we tried to help him, to my knowledge he never came to the Lord. While we don’t want to give up on anyone, we must also understand that if this happened to the Lord Jesus back then, it will happen today. Let’s just be sure that it will never be us who turn back.
For today: May we walk with the Lord with a heart of love and devotion today.
