“One of His disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, saith unto Him, There is a lad here, which hath five barley loaves, and two small fishes: but what are they among so many?” (John 6:9).
Andrew’s statement was in response to the question that Christ Jesus asked Philip as to how they were going to feed 5,000 men plus women and children. It was suppertime, and Christ was about to work a mighty, mighty miracle. Philip was busy calculating how much money they would need to even begin to give them a tiny bite of food. Andrew, bless his heart, spotted the boy, the lunch, the five little barley loaves, and the two small fish. I’ve tried to picture Andrew’s exasperation, “But what are these among so many?” The needs were overwhelming, and the resources were so tiny. It must have seemed hopeless. To be honest, it would have been had it been any person other than the Lord Jesus. You might feel like your abilities and resources are so tiny and the needs and responsibilities are so huge. We’ve all felt this way. How wonderful to keep focused on the Lord Jesus Who has the situation well in hand.
For today: On one hand there was a lad and a lunch. But on the other hand there was the Christ! All were fed, and twelve large basketsful were left over! Aren’t you glad that you belong to such a One as your Savior?
