I loved the opportunity to be one of the professors at Baptist Bible Institute of Cleveland. Every Monday night for years I had the privilege of teaching students who had worked all day, hurried to classes after work (some didn’t even have time to eat supper!) and were eager to learn all they could about serving the Lord.
One semester I taught a class for pastoral counseling. I was asked “So what’s one of the most difficult things facing Christian counselors today?” The class was really interested in what I was going to share with them from my personal experience.
“I will give you the top five most difficult things,” I told them. I started writing them on the whiteboard starting with five and working my way down the list. They might surprise you.
“5. Lives have become more twisted in sinful situations, and sometimes there are some real complications.
4. Dealing with people who claim to know Christ and yet know little or nothing about the Scriptures.
3. Seeing people who are not willing to do their counseling homework and be faithful.
2. Trying to help someone who really doesn’t want help.
Are you ready for number 1? The number 1 challenge I face is getting people to be honest. Instead of saying, ‘I can’t,’ I want them to be honest and simply say, ‘I won’t.’”
God’s resources are limitless, and He truly desires to help us. Think of what the Apostle wrote to us.
“I can do all things through Christ which strengthens me” (Philippians 4:13).
When God’s strength is available from the resources of His riches in glory, He can help us with anything.
On your way today with this closing thought: We all face challenging circumstances. We can face them on our own or we can face them with the help and guidance of the Lord. Talk with Him. Trust Him. Watch what He can do!
