“You were sealed with that Holy Spirit of promise, which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of His glory” (Ephesians 1:13-14).
Jeff came into the living room where his parents were sitting and chatting. “Can I ask a question?” Jeff asked. “Oops, were you talking, Dad and Mom?” their fourteen-year-old son asked. “Guess I should have looked first,” and he continued talking. Both parents chuckled, shook their heads, and just loved their boy. “Well, since I have interrupted, can I ask you what it means about the Holy Spirit being the earnest of our inheritance? Pastor Paul told us to see if we could find the answer, and if we couldn’t, then ask our parents! My study Bible doesn’t say anything about this.” Dad was happy to explain that when he bought their car, he put a down payment on it before he came to pick it up. This guaranteed that he would indeed make good on the agreement to purchase the car. Likewise, the Holy Spirit’s presence in our lives guarantees that we belong to the Lord and promises our inheritance in Christ. The teen honestly and sincerely turned around and called back, “Wow! That’s pretty cool, isn’t it, Mom and Dad? Thanks! Can I get a snack, Mom? I’m starved!”
For today: May we be just as thrilled as was Jeffrey!
