It’s Thursday March 21st and do I ever have a treat for you!
A dear friend of mine is Dr. Paul Reimer former Pastor of Bible Baptist Church of Newark, Ohio and the former Retiree Coordinator of Baptist Church Planters. Every Thursday he would post some wonderful thoughts. He’s now Home with the Lord but with the permission of his wife, I am happy to share this wonderful post from 2015 by Dr. Reimer.
Thursdays Thoughts: Didn’t see that one coming!
These are the words that have run through my mind many times over the past few months. The death of a friend. An unexpected bill. A friend taken with illness. Another loses a job. Those could all be placed in the ‘negative’ column of the ‘I didn’t see that one coming!’ form.
But then there are those in the ‘positive’ column. A son, his wife and their ‘puppy’ named Andre’ living with us for a few months, while they’re between houses. A relative of a church member commenting, ‘I know I can call, because you’re always there.’ A friend who was looking for another employer gets transferred to a different department and now loves his job.
Isn’t this what makes life so exciting, so wonderful? Variety!
When ‘the boys’ were still home, every Sunday we would plug in the crock pot with a roast, potatoes, carrots and a couple onions. As we got home from church and opened the door you could smell that familiar aroma. I thought it was wonderful! But one of our sons started asking friends if he could go home with them for Sunday lunch – not just to play, but to avoid the pot roast! Obviously, he didn’t appreciate the routine. He wanted variety.
It is the ‘I didn’t see that coming’ moments that present to us the bouquet of life – good times, tough times, happy times, sad times. And as a new friend of mine says, “It’s all good.”
If these kinds of events cause you to fear, throw you for a loop, make you want to run and hide, let me point you to what, no, Who carries me through them. I believe in a sovereign God ‘Who is too loving to be unkind and too wise to make a mistake.’ He is the One Who ‘prepares a table for me in the presence of my enemies’. He is the One Who ‘before He sends forth His sheep, He goes before them’. All of the events of my life, though I didn’t, He saw them coming! He has prepared me for each of them and He walks me through each of them…and, it’s all good! His name is Jesus Christ.
Thanks Dr. Paul. Thanks to Mrs. Debbie Reimer for allowing me to share this with you.
Take this wonderful verse with you today! “Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and today, and for ever” (Hebrews 13:8).
