“So the Philistine said to David, “Am I a dog that you come to me with sticks?” And the Philistine cursed David by his gods. And the Philistine said to David, “Come to me, and I will give your flesh to the birds of the air and the beasts of the field!” Then David said to the Philistine, “You come to me with a sword, with a spear, and with a javelin. But I come to you in the name of the LORD of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied” (1 Samuel 17:43-45).

This gigantic Goliath stood over nine feet tall (1 Samuel 17:4). Equipped with outrageously heavy gear (1 Samuel 17:5-7), this wicked warrior was totally formidable. Who in their right mind would ever willingly face such an enemy as this? The answer is simple. A young boy who had a shepherd’s heart and complete confidence in his God grabbed his sling shot and off he went to battle.

Of course, his name was David. There are about twenty great spiritual lessons we could think about from this text, but how about this one? It’s not the size of the enemy that counts. It’s how big is our God! Today you will face spiritual enemies at every turn. Some of them are really big, aren’t they? Keep your mind focused and heart directed to the size of your amazing God. Your spiritual armor (Ephesians 6) is far better than David’s sling shot!

As you go about your day today: We will be wise not to face spiritual battles in our own strength. Face them in the name of our great God.
