We are doing something a little different for a few days. In our “Daily Prescriptions” I am bringing to you a tiny portion of a two-page newsletter I send out every Tuesday to our Baptist Church Planters’ retirees. This newsletter is called “Dr. Mike’s Weekly House Call.” From January 18, 2018, here’s the thought for today.
Isn’t it great that we can trust in the Lord? I sometimes try to imagine what life must be like without the Lord. I hear people say things like, “Wasn’t that lucky?” Others have expressed, “So I pulled myself up by my shoestrings and trusted myself to work it out.” I know that you are thrilled not to be living by pulled up shoestrings and luck. What would we ever do without the Lord?
“For My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways My ways, saith the LORD. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways, and My thoughts than your thoughts” (Isaiah 55:8-9).
We not only CAN trust in the Lord, we MUST trust in the Lord! In the margin of my Bible at Isaiah 55:8-9 I have the following outline written about such an awesome God and His ways.
A. This captures my attention. I may not always understand what the Lord is doing in my life, the lives of my family, or the ministries around me. I view things from my perspective which often is deficient. The Lord’s statement of His awesome plan and purpose captures my attention and keeps me focusing on Him.
B. This corrects my actions. Sometimes in careless moments I act like I have to know what is going on in the situations over which I have no control. Can you imagine that? When I remember that our awesome God reminds me about His thoughts and ways not necessarily being my thoughts and ways, it causes me to behave myself and act in trust and obedience.
C. This controls my attitude. A spiritual song has become very special to me because it was very special to my Karen as she battled cancer. It is called “Bow the Knee.” It speaks of trusting the Lord even when we don’t understand the purpose of His plan. It quietly reminds me “In the presence of the King, bow the knee.” I need to be very careful that my attitude manifests the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23).
Back to today! I have no idea what situations you will face today. This, however, I can tell you for sure. If you know Christ as your Savior, you are not alone. You can trust the Lord. You must trust the Lord. He will never fail you.
