The date would have been July 17, 2018. For a couple days I have been taking my “Daily Prescription” readers way back to a brief paragraph or two from a weekly newsletter that I write called “Dr. Mike’s Weekly House Call.” This goes to the retired missionaries of Baptist Church Planters. Here is a little thought from that July 17th update.
I am thankful for Ralph Teetor! You probably have never met Ralph. I’ve never met him either. However, I am also very thankful for the lawyer in whose car Ralph was riding. This lawyer sped up and slowed down, sped up and slowed down. It apparently drove poor Ralph nearly crazy. As a result of this, he went to work and invented something that you and I have used over the years in our automobiles. Do you know what he invented? The year was 1948, and inventor and mechanical engineer Ralph presented what he called a speedostat. We call it “cruise control.” This little device has helped me so very much as I travel. I set the cruise control, and it not only keeps me within the speed limit, it also keeps me from expensive tickets issued by the local police.
God’s Word is not exactly like a cruise control, but in some ways it really is. I will be wise when I believe what it tells me, ”Teach me, O LORD, the way of Thy statutes; and I shall keep it unto the end” (Psalm 119:33).
I will be wise when I practice what it tells me, “But be ye doers of the Word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves” (James 1:22).
I will be wise when I love what it tells me, “O how love I Thy law! It is my meditation all the day” (Psalm 119:97).
I will be wise when I rely upon it and fully trust it, “For ever, O LORD, Thy Word is settled in Heaven. Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path” (Psalm 119:89, 105). As we seek the Lord’s direction through His Word, it will keep us from sin and will help us along the way the Lord desires for us.
Back to today. Use your cruise control in your car and God’s Word in your life. You’ll be glad that you did.
