Years and years ago I shared this adventure with my sister when we were very young children at Oakfield-Alabama Central elementary school. First, let me share a precious and powerful verse with you.
“Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path” (Psalm 119:105).
Yesterday I shared with you a humdinger (something very impressive) of a snowstorm that occurred nearly sixty-five years ago in Western New York. I shared with you the wonderful lessons of knowing the One that speaks to the weather systems and commands their direction (Job 37:5-6, 10).
As youngsters hoping to leave school early, we were so excited watching the snowstorm develop. From our elementary school window we saw it changing from being pretty snowflakes falling into a ferocious storm with near-whiteout conditions. Oh, did it snow! The principal told us that we probably would be staying overnight. The cafeteria ladies served us bowls of chicken noodle soup. It looked like a very long night. Then the principal came to the cafeteria announcing that the following students were to get their coats and come immediately to the downstairs exit. My little sister and I were hurried onto the school bus in the midst of the storm. Other students boarded with the help of teachers. Before us went a Genesee County snowplow. Behind us lined up the Sheriff’s Deputy with his overhead lights flashing. A second bus driver stood up front to help the children getting off the bus and to their homes. We were asked to be very quiet as we headed out into the snowstorm. The packed bus was nearly silent. Flashing lights from the plow ahead of us and police car behind us filled our bus. Ahead of us the every once in awhile the plow shined a spotlight on the electric poles as we made our way along. Later I learned that that was the only way the snowplow driver was able to tell for sure that he was still on the road!
Sometimes it is just about as scary and hard to see in life. That’s when we need to invest extra time in God’s Word. It is a light unto our path. By the way, we made it home, but we were snowed in for at least four days before the next plow made it back to our road.
For today: If you know Christ, you belong to the One Who speaks to the weather patterns. What an awesome Father!
