“But God commendeth His love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8).
The middle-aged man was well-dressed in his dark suit and necktie. He stood at the small podium in the service to honor the ministry of the inner-city rescue mission. Dignitaries from the local government, local businesses, and supporting churches were there to express the appreciation for the ministry of the mission, as well as to raise funds for its operating expenses. William, the middle-aged man, was very articulate as he said, “Seven years ago on a very cold, wintry night, I staggered into this rescue mission. I was homeless, and I felt completely helpless. I had lost my job, my finances, and worst of all, I had lost my family. Two nights later as I was attending the service in the little chapel in the rescue mission, I heard a speaker that certainly was not dynamic. He seemed very nervous speaking in front of our little assembly. But he read a verse from the Scriptures that changed my life that night. It was Romans 5:8, “But God commendeth His love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” Never had I heard such an amazing truth in my life. I felt entirely unlovable, but I could not escape the blessed fact that Christ loves me and died for my sin. I learned that He rose again from the dead, and I placed my faith and trust in Him. My life began to change. Now these many years later, I stand before you as a testimony as to what this mission and its message can do in the life of a man who desperately needs salvation.” The crowd began to applaud the speaker. He quickly brought it to an end and said, “Do not applaud me. Applaud the Lord Jesus, who died and rose again for us!”
For today: You may not have been homeless, but you still were a sinner before the Lord Jesus saved you. Aren’t you glad for His salvation?
