“This do in remembrance of me” (1 Corinthians 11:24).
Often in Bible-believing churches, the Lord ’s Supper is observed around the first Sunday of each month. Perhaps you will have communion today in your local church. The Apostle Paul laid out the wonderful truth of the glorious picture of the body of Christ given on the cross and His precious blood shed as the sacrifice for our sins. This ordinance is a picture of what the Lord Jesus did on Calvary. The bread stays bread; it is a symbol. The grape juice stays grape juice; it is also a symbol. But we are to eat these in remembrance of Him. Lucy and her husband, Carl, received the bread and were quietly waiting for the pastor to lead the congregation in eating it when they heard a sound. Opening her eyes and looking to the left, Lucy saw two young people who were obviously texting each other and nearly giggling out loud. The even sadder thing was that these young people were seated in between their parents. Lucy silently whispered, “O Lord, please help me to focus solely on You and what You did for me. Help me to be in full remembrance of You.” We must never be a distraction to others and don’t allow anything to distract you on what it means to ‘do this in remembrance’ of the Lord.
For today: Hopefully you will not suffer this kind of distraction during communion. Nevertheless, ask the Lord to help you to fully focus on Him as you ‘do this in remembrance’ of the Lord Jesus.
