“For the LORD Most High is terrible; He is a great King over all the earth” (Psalm 47:2).
How in the world can the Lord be called Most High and “terrible” in the same sentence? Well, let me assure you that the Hebrew word is yare which means, “to be feared, to be revered, to strike terror, to stand in awe of.” When the KJV was being translated, the word terrible meant “that which solicits awe, terror.” When we think of the word terrible, we think of something or someone that is very bad, very distasteful. But not so with the Lord! He is awesome in all His ways. He is the sovereign God of all the earth. He is the LORD Most High. Our only legitimate response is love, obedience, and adoration. He is awesome.
For today: As you think of the happenings in the world today, aren’t you glad to belong to the awesome LORD Most High?
