“From the end of the earth will I cry unto Thee, when my heart is overwhelmed: lead me to the rock that is higher than I. For Thou hast been a shelter for me” (Psalm 61:2-3).
Bethany poured the hot tea in both her mom’s cup as well as her own. “Mom. How do you keep so composed? I can’t remember ever seeing you lose your temper with Daddy, and I know that he can be difficult at times. How do you do it, Mom?” she asked. Before her mother could say a word, Bethany placed the tea pot on a holder on the table and sat down as tears ran down her cheeks. Quickly Bethany continued, “You’ve gone through so much, and now with Uncle Frank accusing you of such terrible things. Mom, we know that he is not thinking clearly. But I know it hurts. How do you still smile?” she asked. Across the table from Bethany sat a lady, seventy-eight years of age, who had raised her family and lived in her home with a Godly attitude and gracious spirit. Bethany’s mom, Margaret, sipped her tea and quietly said, “When the hard times come, I run for shelter. He never fails. Honey,” Margaret said to her oldest daughter, “let me quote Psalm 61:1-2 and then let me explain.” Three cups of tea later, it had been a special time of mentoring and discipleship.
For today: How does Psalm 61:2-3 affect your life? I can tell you, it has profoundly affected mine.
