Karen was invited to speak at a ladies’ event following a banquet. The theme of the evening was “Friendship.” She often told me that it was a little bit of a dilemma for her when she was to speak at banquets. She often was so nervous that she didn’t want to eat. However, she didn’t want to offend people by not eating the food. Being the loving husband that I was, I offered to go with her, stay out of sight, eat her food for her, and then drive her home. We both laughed at my “loving offer” as she got in the car and drove off without me!
Let me share the verse Karen used and then what she wrote for her after banquet devotional.
“Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. You are my friends, if you do whatsoever I command you” (John 15:13-14).
Karen wrote: If I were to ask you to write a recipe for friendship, what would it look like? What do people often look for in a friend? Do they seek someone who seems to like them? Do they seek someone who has similar interests, the same values, and will be willing to spend time with them? Are they looking for someone who will accept them just as they are?
Think of the Lord Jesus and what He said the night before He went to the cross for us. He spoke about the greatest thing a friend could do. There is no greater love than the one who lays down his or her life for that friend. That’s what the Lord did for us.
Michael’s observation: How wonderful is the Lord Jesus. He’s our Redeemer, Savior, Lord, King of King and Lord of Lords and Friend! Do you know Him?
