“So shall My Word be that goeth forth out of My mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it” (Isaiah 55:11).
It was just about as awkward as could be. Stan was given the choice between a month in the county jail or four counseling sessions with Dr. Kenward who would see him once a week for a month. He chose the counseling, but it was obvious that he had little interest in changing and almost no commitment to even paying attention. “Stan,” Dr. Kenward said, “it is quite apparent that you don’t want to be here. But I want you to be here, Stan. You know that I am to report on your counseling to Judge Compton twice during the next four weeks. I am going to share God’s Word with you, not my ideas. I want you to listen carefully to a verse that will be our theme verse for the next month. The Bible says, ‘But be doers of the Word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves,’ and that is found in James 1:22. Stan, over the next four weeks, you are going to hear God’s Word. But if you don’t do it, you are only deceiving yourself.” It wouldn’t be until the middle of the third week when Stan was living really sinfully that God’s Word would pierce him like an arrow. “I’m trying to deceive myself. What a fool. I need to be doing God’s Word, not just hearing,” he said out loud to himself as he sobbed sitting in his barren apartment. God’s Word didn’t return void. It accomplished everything that the Lord wanted to accomplish.
For today: So how is God’s Word working in your life? What has He used in His Word to speak to your heart lately?
