Karen was always a well-organized, logical person. I try to be well-organized and logical. Sometimes I nearly achieve it but not always! No so with Karen. She was not a hoarder. If something had served its purpose but was no longer needed, out it went. I never once heard her say, “I’m keeping this just in case I need it someday.”
I want to do something different this week. I am holding her Bible. I’ve discovered some things that I haven’t looked at in a long time. When you consider the personality that Karen had and her determination not to hang onto things no longer needed, you’ll sense the importance of what I discovered she not only kept, but kept in her Bible. There she would see these things often, read them again, and embrace them. I’ll share this with you in just a second. Think of this verse first.
“But God commendeth His love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8). God broadcasted the proof of His love to us even though we surely didn’t deserve it.
Here’s what Karen kept: Every once in a while I would slip a tiny little love note in her Bible in the place to which I would be directing the church family that Sunday. She would read the note, smile at me and pull her right ear. She kept every single one of them.
One day in the middle of the church service, one of our newly adopted little children wrote this love note to Karen. In very childlike printing it thanked her new mom for taking care of her and making good food! It stated that she would love her new mom forever. You guessed it! Karen kept it!
Michael’s observation: It’s nice to be told that you are loved. It’s even better to be told you are loved and shown it. Think about it! Is there someone in your life that you today need to tell and show that you love them? It is amazing how much this will mean to that person!
