“LORD, my heart is not haughty” (Psalm 131:1).
Three times a year the Old Testament Jewish men were to return to Jerusalem (families often made the pilgrimage as well) to worship the Lord. Psalms 120 through 134 comprise the songs that were sung called the “Songs of Ascent” or “Songs of Degrees.” These were sung as the pilgrims and their families ascended up to Jerusalem and up to the Temple.
King David had much for which he could have been very proud. He however kept the proper focus on the LORD, his heart would be truly humble. It’s the same for us today. The greater our focus on the worthiness of our awesome Lord, the more clearly we see ourselves and that, my friend, is very humbling.
Linger with me and allow me to share just a couple of these wonderful verses from the Songs of Ascent. How gracious and precious is our Lord that He would care about us.
“I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. My help cometh from the Lord, which made heaven and earth” (Psalm 121:1-2).
“As the mountains are round about Jerusalem, so the LORD is round about His people from henceforth even for ever” (Psalm 125:2).
“Blessed is every one that feareth the LORD; that walketh in His ways” (Psalm 128:1).
I really need to stop and think about this: It is both humbling and marvelous to think of the Lord’s care for His people today. That gives us lots to think about, doesn’t it?
