“If the Lord delight in us, then He will bring us into this land, and give it to us; a land that floweth with milk and honey. Only rebel not ye against the LORD” (Numbers 14:8-9a).
It was a dramatic sight. The people listened to the two opposite reports of the spies and believed the bad report. Hence the congregation of Israel wept overnight. The next day the decision seemed to have been sealed. A new captain would be selected, the present leadership would be stoned, and they would go back to Egypt. Joshua and Caleb tore their clothes as an expression of grief and horror. Then with all their might they called on the children of Israel one last time not to turn away, but to trust in the Lord. Obey Him! Go forward! This time the answer came back that the congregation was ready to stone them as well. And God suddenly, dramatically, and majestically appeared at the tabernacle located in the center of the camp (Numbers 14:10). Disobedience is profoundly serious. I am sure at that moment, Joshua and Caleb were very glad they obeyed.
For today: It may not be as dramatic a moment as it was for Joshua and Caleb, but at the end of today, I know I will be glad that I followed the Lord. How about you?
