They were in the middle of the Sea of Galilee.
They were in the middle of the night.
They were in the middle of a storm.
Matthew records, “But the ship was now in the midst of the sea, tossed with waves: for the wind was contrary” (14:24). Quite literally their boat was being battered by the winds which violently fought against them. Several of the disciples were expert fishermen and were very used to navigating the winds and storms of the Galilee. But this was different. As hard as they tried, as great as their fight, the ship was out of control as the storm raged in all its fury.
Then everything would change.
Somewhere between 3:00 and 6:00 in the morning, Jesus approached them. Imagine this if you can, “And in the fourth watch of the night, Jesus went unto them, walking on the sea” (Matthew 14:25). Peter jumps overboard and for the moment miraculously walks to the Lord. After looking down, sinking, and being rescued by the Lord Jesus, the two get back into the ship and another miracle takes place. We will think of this more tomorrow. There have been times in my life that I have felt like I was in such a storm. Perhaps you are right now as well. You might be feeling like your situation is the middle of the sea, in the middle of the night, in the middle of the storm.
The good news is that we have a Lifeguard that walks on water. Be realistic about your storm, but be sure to focus on your Lifeguard. I can tell you that He is awesome in every situation of our lives.
For today: We belong to the One Who is greater than the storm, nearer than the danger, and stronger than any wind of adversity. Trust Him. Trust Him fully.
