Yesterday I took you to the Matthew 14 account of the disciples who were in the middle of the Sea of Galilee, in the middle of the night, in the middle of the storm. This was no little storm. Those expert fishermen were very used to navigating the winds and storms of the Galilee, but this was different. As hard as they tried, as great as their fight, the ship was out of control as the storm raged in all its fury.
In all His miraculous glory the Lord Jesus walks to His desperate disciples (Matthew 14:25). Today, I want you to visualize with me two precious things.
1. Think of His precious assurance. As He miraculously stands on the water nearby, He calls to them. Matthew records it this way. “But straightway Jesus spoke unto them, saying, be of good cheer; it is I; be not afraid” (Matthew 14:27).
Peter now receives permission to hop out of the boat and come to meet the Lord Jesus on the water. (I know! I know! Sermons and books have been written about Peter looking down, taking his focus off the Lord and sinking. I get it. But I do have to admire his desire and the miracle of his walking on the water! I do not see any of the other disciples willing to risk it.)
2. Think of His precious authority. “And when they were come into the ship, the wind ceased. Then they that were in the ship came and worshipped Him saying, of a truth You are the Son of God” (Matthew 14:32-33).
For today: When you are in one of the storms of life, your Lifeguard not only walks on the water, but He is also Lord over the situation. Trust Him. Worship Him. Read the Word of God and obey it. Watch what the Lord of wind and wave can do in your life and situation.
