“And David said, Is there yet any that is left of the house of Saul, that I may show him kindness for Jonathan’s sake? (2 Samuel 9:1).
What grace is this! The surviving household of Saul would naturally be looked upon as being the enemy by David. Saul hunted David and made his life absolutely miserable. Now David is the king. Often the newly installed king wiped out the remnant of any men who were related to the previous king. This prevented a potential uprising and revolt. But David was so different. He knew the grace and mercy of God. And David extends it now to Mephibosheth, a son of Jonathan. Great kindness was lovingly extended to Saul’s grandson for the sake of Jonathan, his son. Likewise, the Father is kind to us for the sake of His Son. That’s exactly what Paul teaches in Ephesians 4:32, “But be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you.”
For today: God is good to me for the sake of His Son, the Lord Jesus. To whom may I show the same kindness today?
