I realize that my Daily Prescriptions go out to many people in many different places. Here is something that is heavy on my heart for those reading this DP stateside. Let me share a couple of wonderful verses with you and then something to be thinking about.
“Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are appointed by God. Let us walk properly, as in the day, not in revelry and drunkenness, not in lewdness and lust, not in strife and envy. But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to fulfill its lusts” (Romans 13:1, 13-14 ).
If you have time, you really ought to read the entire chapter. What a powerful revelation about the role of government officials and our role as citizens.
I can remember teaching each of our children that a police officer was their friend. If they were lost, needed help, if they felt afraid, or were in danger, they could rely upon the fact that a police officer would come quickly to help them. I realize that a police officer is human and can make a mistake. However, I sincerely believe these things that I taught my children to be true. For many years I was a police chaplain on the streets of a large city. I saw good officers being put into unreasonably difficult situations every day. From my heart let me share. If we respond properly to a police officer’s request, if we speak respectfully, we if obey the law, if we act respectfully, it will be amazing how it will go when we are in conversation with a police officer.
I know this section of Scripture goes far beyond just that of the police. But I for one am sick and tired of watching people disobey the law, act out of control and irresponsibly, deliberately loot and destroy property, and then disrespect the police and blame them for the problem. I need to watch how I live and earnestly pray for those in authority over me. Whenever possible, not only will I respect a police officer or other first responder, I will seek to encourage them.
How practical and powerful is God’s Word. What a privilege to belong to Him.
