“But Jesus called them unto Him, and said, Ye know that the princes of the Gentiles exercise dominion over them, and they that are great exercise authority upon them. But it shall not be so among you: but whosoever will be great among you, let him be your minister; And whosoever will be chief among you, let him be your servant: Even as the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give His life a ransom for many” (Matthew 20:25-28).
There was an uproar in the ranks of the disciples. Zebedee’s wife, the mother of James and John, had requested that the Lord Jesus grant the highest places of honor to her children (Matthew 20:20-21). Needless to say, it didn’t sit very well with the rest of the disciples. It would have been embarrassing for the Lord Jesus to have to put them all in a timeout chair for a few moments! He reminded them that they were acting like those who were Gentiles. He called with reproof to them to get their focus back on Who He is and what He was going to do. Greatness in life is not the mark of some great position of authority. It is the position of service and genuine humility. That must have been some day as they traveled in the direction of Jerusalem. More about this tomorrow.
For today: How does this thing of being a servant, putting others first, and being genuinely humble affect you today?
