“Hear me, O LORD, hear me, that this people may know that Thou art the LORD God, and that Thou hast turned their heart back again. Then the fire of the LORD fell…And when all the people saw it, they fell on their face; and they said, The LORD, He is the God; the LORD, He is the God” (I Kings 18:37-39).
It was a critical time in the life of Israel. Under the wicked administration of King Ahab and Queen Jezebel, the nation had sunk deeper and deeper in sin. God had sent warnings which went unheeded. God withheld the rain which, rather than bringing about national sorrow, seemed to bring about deeper rebellion. Then the day came that God told Elijah to have the administration and the citizens meet him at Mount Carmel. The question as to Who is God in Israel would be settled by fire consuming the sacrifice. Nothing happened when the prophets of Baal called upon him. Nothing! But when Elijah ordered his sacrifice to be drenched in water just before he prayed, at the conclusion of his prayer fire fell from the LORD! The sacrifice, the wood, the stones, and the dust were immediately consumed by the massive fire. No wonder the people fell on their faces as they proclaimed, “The LORD, He is the God, the LORD, He is the God.” Think of it. What opportunities today will the Lord bring into your life to point others to this awesome God?
For today: The same God Who hurled down fire is the same LORD Who is at work in your life. How will this be seen today?
