“Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Spirit” (Matthew 1:18).
I cannot begin to imagine the hurt, anguish, and disappointment Joseph must have faced. Recently someone on the radio suggested that Joseph knew all along and was good with it before Mary left for the hill country. My question then is, “Why was he thinking of these things and planning on divorcing her quietly?” (Matthew 1:19). As we camp here for a day or two, we are reminded that Joseph will soon have an answer to the thing that has crushed him. But the ever present lesson and reminder for us is that sometimes the thing that looks the absolute worst is actually the most incredibly wonderful blessing in all the world. Picture the limited information that is presented for us. Joseph is engaged. Before they were married and before they experienced the deepest intimacy of their marriage, he discovers her pregnancy. We do not know how he makes this discovery, but we know that it was huge. The great lesson is not to jump to hasty conclusions. As easy as it is to think we understand the situation, the answer clearly is not always as it appears at first!
For today: So what are you facing today? Give the Lord time to work out the details for you.
