Who saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to His own purpose and grace (2 Timothy 1:9).
Picture this scene that took place a number of years ago. Two passengers were buckling into their seats on the cross-country flight from Cleveland to Phoenix. After introductions were made and pleasantries were exchanged, the typical “So what brings you to Phoenix?” was asked.
I replied that “I was on my way to preach in one of the missionary church plants in the Phoenix area.”
Within a few moments the massive 737 was climbing through the clouds as the conversation in seats 28A and 28B continued.
“You know I have lived a pretty good life. Tried to follow the Ten Commandments. Go to church once in a while. I expect that I am on my way to Heaven,” said the businessman to the preacher.
I surprised him. “Not me,” I said. “I have not lived a good life according to the Bible. But I know for sure that I am on my way to Heaven because of what the Lord did for me,” I said with conviction in my voice. It was quite a conversation at 33,000 feet in the air.
Are you on your way to Heaven? There’s only one way according to God’s Word.
I rejoice in this wonderful truth. I am so glad that salvation is not by our good works. If it were thus, I would never make it to Heaven. I truly believe that all have sinned (Romans 3:23) and that our salvation is not accomplished by our good works. It is only through Christ (2 Timothy 1:9).
