The Apostle Paul, while still in bound in Roman chains, spoke at least fifteen times to the Philippian believers about joy or rejoicing. He sums it up with “Rejoice in the Lord always. Again I will say rejoice!” (Philippians 4:4).
Life was not easy for Paul. The situation from which he wrote was unpleasant. He had been treated unfairly. The hardships he endured could have been overwhelming. And yet…he speaks of joy! It is always great to remember the difference between the words “happiness” and “joy.”
Happiness is the pleasure that comes when things are going well and the way I would wish.
Joy is the great delight in the Lord Jesus who has brought us into a blessed relationship with Him. It is the fruit that the Holy Spirit wants to be producing in our lives (Galatians 5:22-23). Joy has nothing to do with our circumstances.
I often like to remind myself and you as well of the many things for which we can be thankful and in which we can rejoice. Even though life isn’t easy in this old world, it can be filled with joy in the midst of pain, disappointment and even sorrow! Think of “Dr. Mike’s Half-Dozen Reasons for Joy!”
1. I rejoice because I know the Lord as my Savior. (John 1:12). He’s a treasure divine.
2. I rejoice because I know I will be with Him forever (John 14:1-3). A place in Heaven is mine.
3. I rejoice because my sins are forgiven (Psalm 103:12). Yes, my sins are gone!
4. I rejoice because of His many blessings (Psalm 103:2). These put within my heart a song!
5. I rejoice because I will see the Lord (Revelation 22:4). I will actually gaze upon His face.
6. I rejoice because I know His promises (2 Peter 1:4). His Word I seek to daily embrace.
