”I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on Me should not abide in darkness” (John 12:46).
The gospel of John divides into two main sections. The public ministry of Christ is presented to the multitudes in John 1-12. The private ministry of Christ is revealed to His disciples in John 13-18. John 19-21 detail His death and resurrection. By the time our Savior uttered the words found in our text for today, His public ministry would soon be drawing to a conclusion. Think of what He said to the crowds. He told them that they don’t have to abide in darkness. He is come to be their light. Many years ago I was the camp pastor for the week at Bethany Baptist Camp in Sinclairville, New York. The speaker’s cabin was set in the woods quite a ways up the camp road. One night on my way to speak in chapel, I realized that I had forgotten my flashlight. I debated about going back for it and decided that since I had spoken at this camp so many times, I could make my way up the road without it. Did I have some lessons to learn along the way as I stumbled several times in the darkness! It was so unnecessary. Likewise, many of the people who were listening to the Lord’s words never personally realized the great blessing of Him offering to be their light. Sadly many who hear this statement from the Lord Himself turned away and chose to stumble in the darkness rather than come to Him as the Light. How about you? Do you know the Lord as your Savior? He wants to deliver you from darkness. Isn’t it wonderful to belong to Him?
For today: It is wonderful to know the Lord as our Savior and the Light!
