By the time we wade through the pain, loss, and suffering Job experienced, our hearts break along with him. Then we come to the conclusion of the book, and I feel like we stand amazed and completely in awe of Who our God is and what He does. Think of this with me today.
“God thundereth marvellously with His voice; great things doeth He, which we cannot comprehend. For He saith to the snow, Be thou on the earth; likewise to the small rain, and to the great rain of His strength. By the breath of God frost is given…” (Job 37:5-6, 10).
Let me share these same verses from the New King James Version. “God thunders marvelously with His voice; He does great things which we cannot comprehend. For He says to the snow, ‘Fall on the earth.’ By the breath of God ice is given…” (Job 37:5-6, 10).
Job begins to discover how truly awesome is the Lord his God. The Lord not only thunders, He also controls the weather patterns for all the earth. Those of us who live in the colder northern parts of the United States need to remember that the Lord is the One Who says to the snow, “Fall on the earth.”
It must have taken place almost sixty-five years ago. I was still in elementary school in Oakfield, New York. Early afternoon it began to snow heavily. Snowfall picked up to incredible rates and so did the wind. I can still remember the old phone in our classroom ringing. I was sure that we were going home early. It would be just the opposite. Our teacher informed us that because of the snowstorm, classes would not be dismissed at the regular time today. Probably everyone would be staying for supper and maybe overnight. In an instant our classroom went from jubilation at the snowstorm to despair that we had to stay in school. I’ll share with you more of my little adventure (it gets a whole lot more exciting) tomorrow. But for now, join me in understanding that our great God is totally awesome and sovereign (He’s in charge!) in everything, even the weather. How great He is indeed.
For today: He Who commands the snow and ice is in charge of my life. Do you know this joy?
