“And the king answered them roughly; and king Rehoboam forsook the counsel of the old men, and answered them after the advice of the young men” (2 Chronicles 10:13-14).
Yesterday I wrote of what Paul told Timothy about serving with elders. Timothy was not to rebuke an elder but entreat him as a respectful son would his own father. What great advice for everyone, including pastors, who serve with older folks. On the other hand, younger folks will be wise to at least listen to and consider the counsel of older folks. It would have worked out much better for Rehoboam if he had listened to the counsel of the older men. In the churches I served, I loved visiting with older folks. The lessons they had learned, the counsel they shared, the example they set were good for me to consider personally. When was the last time you talked with an older person and asked for his or her advice? You might be surprised at their wisdom!
For today: May we older folks be wise and set a good example. May younger folks be wise and listen to You, Lord, through the good counsel of their elders.
