“Better to be of a humble spirit with the lowly, Than to divide the spoil with the proud” (Proverbs 16:19). NKJV
My family and I watched just a little of the NBA draft. Since we live near Cleveland, we had some interest to see who the Cleveland Cavaliers would draft. For those who are not sports-minded whatsoever, I will simply say that there was a lot of fanfare as the best of the best young basketball players were introduced and presented to the cheering crowds. As I sat and watched, I had to be honest. These young players were good. The problem was they knew it. There was very little humility on display and a whole lot of pride. Soon many of them would become extremely wealthy. I thought of them when I read this text. But on a more practical note, how about where you and I live? May the Lord deliver us from any spark of pride and make us real, authentic, transparent and humble believers. Pride will keep Him from using us. Humility opens wide the doors for God’s blessings.
For today: When describing someone who was on the proud side, my grandfather would say, “He’s too big for his own britches.” May this never be true of us!
