“But God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world is crucified unto me, and I unto the world” (Galatians 6:14).
The situation was really incredible that night. Folks were excited to have the guest speaker who earlier in the day flew across country to be with them for the service. The person who was introducing the speaker was very gracious in mentioning to the church family some of the things about this man. He spoke of the man’s education. He spoke of the man’s experience with family as well as his ministry. As the presenter spoke on, the guest speaker became more and more uncomfortable to the point of embarrassment. In his heart he whispered to the Lord, “I don’t know who this man is that is being introduced, Lord! You and I know that I am nowhere near as good or great as being presented to these people tonight! Ah Lord God, help me to graciously fix this situation.” The introduction was finally over, and the guest speaker rose to walk to the pulpit amidst a strong round of applause. Graciously the speaker thanked the church family. He said, “Thank you very much, dear friends. You have made me feel very welcome this evening. While I want to thank the pastor for his very gracious words, I want to stand before you and be totally honest. I am nowhere near as good as he has proclaimed me to be. I do thank the Lord for the many opportunities that He has brought my way, but I simply want to thank the Lord Jesus who died for me and rose again. If I have any glorying to do, it will be in the wonderful work of redemption wrought by my Savior on that old rugged cross!” It was a great family conference that would follow.
For today: We will be wise not to think more highly of ourselves than we ought to.
