Something I want you to know about Karen.
I loved to listen to Karen work with the two boys born to us as well as the children that were coming into our home and being adopted into our family. Learning to say “thank you” and really mean it was right up on there on Karen’s priority lists. When our children would receive a gift, that same day she was helping them to write the “thank you” card.
Luke 17:11-19 shares the account of the ten lepers who were healed and only one came back to say, “thank you.” She often talked about this with our children, and I know she also taught about it in several of the ladies’ conferences in which she was the speaker.
“And it came to pass, that, as they went, they were cleansed. And one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, and with a loud voice glorified God, And fell down on his face at His feet, giving Him thanks: and he was a Samaritan” (Luke 17:14-16).
What a great reminder. Here’s what she wrote one day.
A man from Samaria who was despised by the Jews, sick with leprosy, was an outcast, needed a Savior. He needed a friend.
I, too, came to Jesus dead in my sins with nothing to offer Him. But (Romans 5:8) “God commended His love toward me in that while I was yet a sinner, Christ died for me.” Now I am His. What privileges that come with this relationship. I have the Holy Spirit within, directions for life, access to the very Throne of God and eternal life.
Here’s my takeaway.
We are greatly blessed. So were the nine. I don’t want to be like them. I truly want to be like the Samaritan who had nothing but his love, devotion and appreciation who came back and gave thanks. I need to do this much more. In fact, I’ve enjoyed writing my own blessings notebook.
Let me send you on your way with a smile.
I don’t remember if I was the one that had been away preaching or if she had been away speaking at a ladies’ retreat. One of us were just coming home. How glad we were to see each other again. A very tender moment was shattered with hysterical laughing by Michael and Karen.
I held her close, kissed her and whispered sincerely in her ear.
Michael: “How I’ve missed you. I love you, sweetheart. I’m so thankful you’re my wife.”
Karen whispers in my ear: “Of course you’re thankful. You’ve got me!”
Yep. The moment was special. So is giving thanks to the Lord. Let’s work on that this week.
