Volume 4 Number 32 “That Statement Really Struck Her”

Karen was my faithful partner in life and ministry for over forty-five years. In spite of being surrounded by a pew full of children (some of whom never had been in a church service before), she always managed to take notes on my sermon. She also could be looking straight ahead and disciplining three wiggle-worm children over to her side at the same time!
Years ago I remember preaching on the topic of dealing with overwhelming circumstances. I used the Old Testament Psalms and various texts that dealt with the psalmist’s experiences of being overwhelmed. King David speaks about his heart being overwhelmed in Psalm 143:4. She has the entire outline of that message and even the church in which I preached it.
King David made a dynamic statement in Psalm 143:10a and 12b. Let me share this with you and then I will show you what Karen further studied on her own. “Teach me to do Thy will; for Thou art my God…” (Psalm 143:10). “…I am Thy servant” (Psalm 143:12).
Karen wrote: “Thou art my God” (vs 10a). “I am Your servant” (vs. 12b). When I am shattered, crushed, and brought down, I can remember that He is my God and I am His servant. Therefore:
1. The answer will come. “Hear my prayer, O LORD, give ear to my supplications: in Thy faithfulness answer me, and in Thy righteousness” (Psalm 143:1).
2. The morning will come. “Cause me to hear Thy lovingkindness in the morning; for in Thee do I trust” (Psalm 143:8).
3. The directions will come. “Thy Spirit is good; lead me into the land of uprightness” (Psalm 143:10b).
Michael’s observation: King David’s incredible statement, “You are my God and I am your servant” really struck her. I remember her being in an intense series of chemotherapies at this very time. In some of the deepest days of her illness, she wrote of the answer, the morning, and the directions that would come on days that she felt overwhelmed. How will this play out in your life right now, my friend?
