Volume 4 Number 45, “Willing to Stand Alone Sometimes!” Part One
November 10th, 2021
A month ago I was speaking at the Rochester Baptist Church of Rochester, Ohio. On one of those Sundays, I brought a message about Elijah on Mt. Carmel with wicked Ahab, the prophets of Baal and the fire from the holy and true Lord God. Now today as I am reading through Karen’s notes for a three session ladies’ conference, I discovered she used Elijah as one of her session topics. She was speaking about the Lord being in charge and placing us in opportunities for us to take a stand for Him.
Sometimes those “taking a stand for the Lord” opportunities will come corporately for an entire church family. Often they are, however, taking a stand personally alone! Let me share the Scripture Karen used, and then I will pass along what she wrote.
“And Elijah the Tishbite, who was of the inhabitants of Gilead, said unto Ahab, As the LORD God of Israel liveth, before Whom I stand, there shall not be dew nor rain these years, but according to my word. And it came to pass at the time of the offering of the evening sacrifice, that Elijah the prophet came near, and said, LORD God of Abraham, Isaac, and of Israel, let it be known this day that Thou art God in Israel, and that I am Thy servant” (1 Kings 17:1; 18:36a).
Karen wrote: As you continue to be aware of Who God is and His welcome presence in your life, it becomes very natural to view each day as His adventure for you. Let’s look into God’s Word and see what God can do with a surrendered life.
Notice in 1 Kings 18:36 how Elijah refers to himself and how he refers to God. He has the right perspective by referring to Him as Sovereign Lord and to himself as servant! He is willing to be used of God. Elijah, which means “Yahweh is my God,” faces wicked King Ahab. Notice his confidence in the One who sent him. In 1 Kings 17:1 the LORD God Who lives sends him with the news to Ahab that it is not going to rain because of the growing sin and wickedness in Israel.
He is the LORD. This is His personal name which demonstrates that He is the Self-Existent One. He is God which proclaims the title of His office. He is the One Who puts forth power and majesty. He is living. In contrast to Baal, He alone is the living LORD God.
Michael’s observation: Karen studied this passage and presented the Bible study challenge in an outline to the ladies. I’ll share her outline with you next week. For right now this week, however, I want to accept Karen’s challenge to view each day as His adventure for me. This might involve my willingness to stand alone for Him. I’m so grateful that I never have to do this in my own strength. He is God. I am His servant. How about you? How will this affect your life today?
