Karen loved it and spoke of it often.
I would say without a shadow of doubt, it was one of her favorite topics to use in her workshops. You have read of it often in “Karen’s Notes” on Wednesdays. When we would have our daily couple’s devotions, she often thanked the Lord for it. And I have been an eyewitness to the many times that Karen extended it in our ministry, marriage, and home.
I am talking about “mercy!” She marvelled at the greatness of the Lord and His wonderful mercy. Two of the Old Testament verses she marked and even circled are Psalm 145:3 and 8. Let me share them with you.
“Great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised; and His greatness is unsearchable. The LORD is gracious, and full of compassion; slow to anger, and of great mercy” (Psalm 145:3, 8).
Karen circled the word “Great” in Psalm 145:3. In the margin she wrote the following: “Totally awesome. Cannot be put into words.”
In her Bible study journal, she jotted down several phrases as she thought about the “great mercy” of the Lord as found in Psalm 145:8.
Karen wrote: “God is merciful. God withholds what I really deserve! His mercy is eternal (Psalm 103:17). He delights in mercy (Micah 7:18); makes my salvation possible (Titus 3:5). ‘It is of the Lord’s mercies that we are not consumed’ (Lamentations 3:22). God withholds what I really deserve!”
Michael’s observation: It is not just that our God is merciful. David spoke about the Lord being “of great mercy.” Please understand. This does not mean that we can take lightly sinful actions. It does not give me a free pass to do whatever I wish. But it does make me thankful that from my awesome, incredibly great God comes compassion, kindness and a sense of withholding what I really rightfully have coming to me. Oh, how great is His mercy.
To whom would the Lord have you show mercy today?
