It is somewhat of a mystery.
There is no date on this one page of notes. That tells me that it was not a Friday night – Saturday morning conference with multiple speaking times for Karen. As I read through it, I could tell that it was written for ladies and their daughters, and the subject was the “Fruit of the Spirit.” From what I can read in her opening introduction, this subject apparently was chosen by the host church, and Karen was so pleased to come and thankful for the opportunity to share with them.
I do remember our doorbell ringing and a moment later Karen came to my writing desk in our home with an edible arrangement of the most wonderful fruit imaginable. I have a feeling that is where her opening illustration originated. Let me share the Scripture text, and then I will share a little from her notes.
“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance: against such there is no law” (Galatians 5:22-23).
Karen wrote: Our topic today is the “Fruit of the Spirit.” Visualize with me. The doorbell rings. There a friendly face awaits you. You are presented a beautiful fruit basket as a gift to you!
Well, salvation is truly God’s greatest gift to us. Romans 5:8, “But God commmendeth His love toward us; in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” Michael’s quick interruption: she then wrote, “share plan of salvation.” Karen continued to write: At the time of salvation, the Holy Spirit indwells us according to Romans 8:9. He comes bearing a gift to each of us- the wonderful fruit of the Spirit.
Michael’s observation: I will pick up her notes right at this spot next week. How very important for us to remember that as we are going through hard and difficult days, we are never alone. The precious Holy Spirit has indwelled us and will never leave us. Far better than any gift that’s delivered on the other side of the doorbell, the Holy Spirit desires to grow His wonderful fruit in our lives. What a gift!
