Let me take you back to a conversation between Karen and me as I recall it.
Karen: “Well, Honey. This is an interesting invitation.”
Michael: “What’s that?”
Karen: “I received a phone call this morning and spoke to a very dear pastor’s wife who shared that a number of their ladies were going through sudden and severe hardships. She invited me to come and do a ladies’ conference that will be helpful and encouraging.”
Michael: “When do they want this ladies’ conference?”
Karen: “As soon as I can come.”
And indeed, she got there as soon as she could.
It was a wonderful conference. Think of the Scripture she shared.
The LORD is my strength and my shield; my heart trusted in Him, and I am helped: therefore my heart greatly rejoiceth and with my song will I praise Him (Psalm 28:7).
She underlined that verse and in the margin put an * beside it.
This was her outline and a brief portion from one of the paragraphs she wrote.
1. King David’s Petition to the Lord (28:1-4).
2. King David’s Confident Praise to the Lord (28:5-8).
3. King David’s Prayer for Deliverance and Guidance (Psalm 28:9).
When do we especially need God’s strength? David referred to the Lord as “my Strength.” Think about it. When do we need this special strength?
When we are discouraged.
When physically we are weakened.
When mentally we are stretched by the situation.
When spiritually we are needy.
When times of confusion come to us.
Think of what the Lord has promised to us. Listen to Him as He says, “For I am the LORD Thy God, the Holy One of Israel” (Isaiah 43:3). He reassures us by reminding us, “With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible” (Matthew 19:26). Be thoughtful of this statement, “For with God nothing shall be impossible” (Luke 1:37). David was in a situation that he desperately needed God’s strength.
Let me send you on your way with a question.
While there are many joyous occasions in the Christian life, there are also hard days and deep trials. My question is this. When troubles come, and they will, which direction shall you run? Some will run away from their troubles while others will run to the Lord.
King David ran to the Lord. Think of how he referred to the Lord.
My strength.
My shield.
One in Whom I can trust.
One in Whom I find help.
One Who causes my heart to rejoice.
One Who is the theme of my song.
One Who is worthy of praise.
One to Whom we must run as we face hard days.
So, when hard days come, do you run to the LORD, your strength and shield?
