A beautiful act that must be understood in the cultural context of the day and a wicked reaction on the part of those who observed it. Come with me to the amazing event recorded in Mark 14:3-4.
“There came a woman having an alabaster box…very precious; and she broke the box, and poured it on His head. And there were some that had indignation within themselves, and said, Why was this waste of ointment made?”
What a beautiful and action unfolds before us. Out of a heart of love and devotion, the woman long ago brought the very expensive gift to the Lord Jesus and poured it on His head. I know this sounds strange in our culture today. However, it was an act of supreme devotion and worship. That is the beautiful act.
The wicked reaction of the unsaved who were watching is shocking. They cloaked their contempt for Christ in a false spirituality by saying this gift could have been given to the poor (Mark 14:5).
The lesson I want us to take today would be two-fold. First, there will always be those who misunderstand our motives and service. Second, whenever you take a step of obedience and devotion, remember the Lord Jesus sees both your motive and act (Mark 14:6-7).
Friends, think of this today: Regardless of what others may say about us, remember today that the important thing is to cherish what the Lord Jesus thinks and says about us.
