I am studying and preparing a message for a local church where I will have the privilege of filling in for a dear pastor who will be away over the weekend. I’m developing a message on the topic of “Remembering.” I don’t know about you, but for me, it is very easy to forget things. Apparently I am not alone.
The word “remember” is found 148 times in 144 verses in the Bible. In the book of Deuteronomy, the word “remember” is found 14 times. On the Sunday that I will fill in for my pastor friend, the message will be entitled “Remembering and Rejoicing.” The message has four points to it. Over the next four days, I will share one of the points of the outline and take you to four wonderful passages in this book of Remembering, Deuteronomy. For today.
1. Remember God’s grace. “And remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and the LORD your God brought you out from there by a mighty hand and by an outstretched arm…” (5:15).
How do we begin to comprehend the grace of God? Where do we find words to express the beauty of God’s dealing in goodness and kindness to people who are totally unworthy? No library could contain the number of volumes that it would take to begin writing sufficiently of this marvelous grace.
Our awesome God reminded the children of Israel that He had reached with an outstretched arm into Egypt to deliver them. They were in a horrible condition as slaves in Egypt. They were trapped and had no way out of their dilemma. In His powerful grace, He brought about a wonderful relocation. He brought them out. And friends, it wasn’t that they snuck out one night when everyone was sound asleep in Egypt. In His incredible grace, He created a miraculous demonstration of His power. He brought them out with His Own mighty hand and outstretched arm.
That, my friend, is grace. But think of this. We Christ-followers were dead in trespasses and sin (Ephesians 2:1). Then His grace reached out to us. Embrace the beauty of His grace as we conclude today with Ephesians 2:4-9. “But God, Who is rich in mercy; because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), and raised us up together, and made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, that in the ages to come He might show the exceeding riches of His grace in His kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.”
Join me! I want to be thinking of His grace, thanking Him frequently, and rejoicing throughout today. Will you join me as well?
