“Fearfulness and trembling are come upon me, and horror hath overwhelmed me. And I said, Oh that I had wings like a dove! For then would I fly away, and be at rest” (Psalm 55:5-6).
David was surrounded by trouble. From early morning until later at night and sometimes even in the middle of the night when he couldn’t sleep, David had troublesome thoughts and situations upon his mind and heart. Peter and his wife Janet thought of David and his words many times. Peter often told his friends, “As David said, I would love to have the wings of a bird and fly away from all of my troubles.” Usually folks agreed with him and the conversation went on to other matters. But one day he quoted these words of David to elderly Carrie who replied, “Ah, Peter. You’ve quoted King David’s words from Psalm 55, haven’t you? But you didn’t quote the words that follow several verses later. David said in Psalm 55:16-17, ‘As for me, I will call upon God; and the LORD shall save me. Evening, and morning, and at noon, will I pray, and cry aloud: and He shall hear my voice.’ Then a couple of verses later in Psalm 55:22 he said, ‘Cast thy burden upon the LORD, and He shall sustain thee: He shall never suffer the righteous to be moved.’ Peter, my friend,” Carrie continued, “wings of a bird to fly away would be nice, but lifting your prayer and burden to the Lord and Him hearing and helping are even better.” It was a precious moment for Peter. How does this affect you today?
For today: In the deepest troubles the Lord truly is there for His people. I really know this to be true. How about you?
