“I cried unto Thee, O LORD: I said, Thou art my refuge and my portion in the land of the living” (Psalm 142:5).

David had been anointed by Samuel to become the next king of Israel. However, his inauguration had not taken place, and wicked King Saul viciously pursued him day and night trying to kill him.

Many Bible scholars believe that Psalm 142 probably was written when David was in one of the most perilous and frightening times of his life. Hiding in the cave with Saul nearby (1 Samuel 22:1 or 24:1-4), David’s heart must have raced with raw emotion. To say that he was in a very difficult place is greatly understated. It was among the worst days of his life. Far greater than the security of the cave, David came to know and rely upon the refuge and security of the Lord his God. Looking to the Lord to bring him through and allow him to continue in the land of the living was a great blessing to David.

I know of people today who are going through times of great peril. Whatever you are facing today, may you as a believer realize the sheer joy and comfort of God being your Refuge and your Portion.

For today: How awesome is our God! He is bigger than any problem we could ever face.
