I’m thinking of the word “perfunctory” which basically means being careless in attention or half-hearted. It is saying something without really thinking it through and capturing the full impact of the meaning. We must never be “perfunctory” in our attitude toward the Lord, His Word, or our worship of Him.
The opposite of perfunctory is to be careful, diligent, and whole-hearted. Think of these verses!
“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul. And with all your strength, and with all your mind” (Luke 10:27).
“Do not turn aside from following the LORD, but serve the LORD with all your heart” (1 Sam.12:20).
“Teach me Thy way, O LORD; I will walk in Thy truth: unite my heart to fear Thy name” (Ps.86:11).
“With my whole heart I sought Thee: O let me not wander from Thy commandments” (Ps. 119:10).
“And they sent forth Barnabas, that he should go as far as Antioch. Who, when he came, and had seen the grace of God, was glad, and exhorted them all that with purpose of heart they would cleave unto the Lord” (Acts 11:22-23).
I don’t know about you, but I need to be careful. I need to be diligent. I need to be whole-hearted.
