“Remember, O LORD, what is come upon us: consider, and behold our reproach. Woe unto us, that we have sinned!” (Lamentations 5:1,16b).
Jeremiah is writing in profound sorrow because the judgment of the true and Holy One has fallen on beloved Jerusalem. Zion’s pitiful estate is the direct result of their sinful life choices and the hardness of their hearts in failing to repent. Wow! Do I ever sound old fashioned today! Actually, I know that there is nothing old fashioned about my Daily Prescription today. I fear that it is right up-to-date in current accuracy. God clearly warned His children that if they sinned and turned away from Him, then serious consequences would follow (Deuteronomy 31). In my lifetime I have witnessed the deliberate defiance of our American culture in spurning the LORD Who so blessed us. I personally and truly believe that with the two political presidential candidates from whom we will choose is the beginning of the evident hand of judgment upon our precious country. But! But I am not despondent nor am I discouraged. What an exciting time in which to be living! What a great time to shine with the gospel as a lighthouse on the shore! God is still God, and He is in full control. I wouldn’t want to be living at any other time. I’m listening for the trumpet as I serve every day.
For today: There are consequences to sin both personally and nationally. Thankfully our God is still dealing in grace.
