“I said, I will take heed to my ways, that I sin not with my tongue: I will keep my mouth with a bridle, while the wicked is before me” (Psalm 39:1).
King David viewed the brevity of life (39:4-5) and realized that compared to eternity he had a very short opportunity to live for God. One of the things that David resolved to keep before himself was his words and what would come from his mouth. The word “bridle” is actually the word “muzzle.”
What a picture. Typically, the king could say anything he wished to say. King David was so different, even though he was far, far from perfect. I am very far from perfect. So are those who faithfully read these Daily Prescriptions. So, let’s get in the boat with David, the King of Israel. Especially in times of tension, stress, and difficulty, with the help of the Lord and the intention of our hearts, let’s put an invisible muzzle on our mouths! How great if we get through today without sinning with our mouths!
Here’s a thought: You can tell the state of the heart from the words that flow off the tongue! Be listening to the words around you. They are a pretty good indicator of the spiritual heart conditions on display.
