“Yet did not the chief butler remember Joseph, but forgot him. And it came to pass at the end of two full years, that Pharaoh dreamed” (Genesis 40:23-41:1).
Joseph, falsely accused, was imprisoned by the Egyptian officials. Into his life came the butler and the baker of Pharaoh. You remember the account. Joseph accurately interpreted the dreams and pleaded with the butler to please bring his case to Pharaoh. Following the release of that butler, Joseph spent two more full years because the wicked butler “forgot” him. The word “forgot” doesn’t mean that Joseph slipped his mind. Rather, it gives the idea of “ceasing to care, to ignore, to wither.” The butler was rescued from the prison but ruthlessly ceased to care for Joseph. The word of caution to each of us who know Christ is that we must never be satisfied to safe in the Lord and to ignore the great needs of others along the way.
For today: I must rejoice in Christ. But I also must remember the needs and importance of others all around me. Who needs your prayers, encouragement, and help today?
