Think of what the Psalmist told us about God’s Word.
1. God’s directions keep us from sinful hurts. “Thy word have I hid in mine heart that I might not sin against Thee” (Psalm 119:9).
2. God’s directions give us strength. “Strengthen Thou me according unto Thy word” (Psalm 119:28).
3. God’s directions give us guidance. “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path” (Psalm 119:105).
Yesterday I told you about two disagreeing state agencies concerning the color our church bus should be painted. For years our church transported public school children from several school systems to be taught “Religious Education.” One state agency demanded our fleet be painted National Chrome Yellow. Another powerful state agency insisted they must be any other color.
We were caught in the middle. So, when I went for my bus driver’s test, I was really caught in between two “warring” state officials who argued in my presence, but finally the test inspector was ordered to give me the road test. I knew I had better really, really follow his directions or I would surely fail.
He gave me short, obnoxious directions about turns left and right. Suddenly he had me turn down an extremely narrow side street on the east side of the city. “Now turn left,” he said. As I approached the end of the narrow street, I saw that he had deliberately given me instructions that no bus driver could pass. At the end of the city street was a railroad track siding used rarely by a local factory. Within two car lengths was a stop sign. He gave me directions that were impossible to pass. Either I stopped the bus on a railroad track (even though it was a siding) or I went through a stop sign. I stopped at the track, saw there was no train using the siding, and stopped at the stop sign. “FAILED: Dangerous action. Driver stopped bus on railroad tracks.”
Two weeks later I was issued another driver’s test. Thankfully I had a different inspector and passed.
For today: How thankful I am that God’s Word is not designed to trick us and trap us, causing us to fail. Open God’s Word today. Read it. Believe it. Practice it with the Lord’s help, and of course, trust the Author.
