“Be ye therefore followers of God, as dear children” (Ephesians 5:1).
The word “followers” is an interesting word. I am not a language expert; however, in checking out this verse I discovered that the word “followers” is mimetes, which means “to be an imitator.” I saw this illustrated not too long ago. Our daughter and her children were at our home for a visit. During this time my granddaughter began to pick on her mom. She had us in complete stitches as we couldn’t stop laughing. Kait imitated her mother’s words, looks, and actions. Her mother would shake her finger and laughingly say, “Now stop that.” Kait of course would imitate the finger shaking and say, “Now stop that.” This went on and on until we couldn’t stop laughing. On the other hand, it is no laughing matter when we are reminded to be followers or imitators of God. Please understand that Paul was not telling us that we would ever become deity. Rather, we can imitate those things of Christ wonderfully manifested in His humanity. Some of the things to imitate would be His mercy, grace, truth, and love. Not only can we be a follower; we are commanded to be a follower.
For today: Isn’t it wonderful to belong to the Lord. Don’t you wish everyone belonged to Him?
