Over the past few days we’ve been focusing on one word for the day. How about one more word? But before I give it to you, let me tell you that ours was one long and one short. What am I talking about? Well, friends, I am talking about our black telephone that hung on our kitchen wall. We were on a party line of four. My grandmother’s was one long ring. My neighbor across the street was two short rings. The other neighbor was, hmmmm! I can’t remember!
One word focus for today: remember!
All my life I have had the privilege of serving the Lord Jesus and His precious people. The older folks have told me how strange it is to be able to remember things that took place over sixty years ago and not be able to remember something from two weeks ago.
I am growing older for sure. I can remember picking the phone up and hearing someone talking on it. As a young boy, I was under strict orders that when that happened, I was to hang up as quietly as possible. Funny how many details I can “remember” from years ago.
Did you know that the Lord often spoke of our need to remember? This word is found 148 times in 144 verses in the Bible. Here are just two or three that really spoke to my heart today.
“Remember His marvelous works that He hath done, His wonders, and the judgments of His mouth” (1 Chronicles 16:12).
“Some trust in chariots, and some in horses: but we will remember the name of the LORD our God” (Psalm 20:7).
“I will remember the works of the LORD: surely I will remember Thy wonders of old” (Psalm 77:11).
“Remember now thy Creator in the days of thy youth…” (Ecclesiastes 12:1).
Simply stated, be on guard in your busy day that you don’t become so preoccupied with situations that you don’t bring your Savior to your mind in prayer and praise throughout the day. As mornings are probably sometimes a rush to get out of the door, try getting up a few minutes earlier so that you will have some precious moments in the Word of God. That’s how the Lord speaks to us today. Remember the Lord. Think about Him often. It will help you to trust Him more, love Him far greater and obey Him with joy more consistently.
We need to be people who will remember!
